| | | Keeping and Transmitting Knowledge - ROSETTA Spacial Mission
Knowledge management is a system of initiatives, methods, and tools intented to create an optimal flow of knowledge for success of the company and its customers d'après Debra Amidon et Eunika Mercier-Laurent Entovation International |
Within the design of Rosetta Lander operational effectiveness, CNES, the French Space Agency has intitiated an actual knowledge management system named COROLLES. CNES has contracted the development of the first application, COROLLE-DOC, to the company CS-SI in order to address document-based knowledge. |
The design has to answer a problem of knowledge support particulmarly critical. |
After a launch in February 2004 by Ariane 5, the probe Rosetta of ESA, the European Space Agency, will observe the comet 67P / Churyumov-Gerasimenko from July 2014. The intent is to study all the physics of the comet from a firxt unactive phase (meeting point at 3 astronomical units of the Sun) up to a period of maximum activity (crossing the perihelion in 2015). One part of the probe will remain in orbitation around the nucleus of the comet, the other one, the lander, will land on the comet and will process in a very short time scientific operations with specially surface and subsurface samples analyses. |
Thus more than ten years will separate the the contitution of the knowledge and its usage, intented over a few-day period with an operational team currently unknown. |
There are many benefits to be obtained from COROLLE-DOC environment |
| . | capitalization and perpetuation of heterogeneous information, formalized or not; |
| . | compilation and synthesis of knowledge |
| . | Assistance to research and selection of relevant knowledge; |
| . | formalization processes and knowledge elaboration from raw material |
| . | easy adaptation for providers and users; |
| . | creation of collaborative dynamics within projects; |
| . | natural insertion in existing organizations, benefits drawn rapidly. |
The design architecture proposed by COROLLES is based on the building of progressive layers, enabling a system of assistance in decision making and training to be offeredwhich stems from "raw" elements of knowledge. |
The development of knowledge management systems implies strong user involvement from the upstream phases of the project. |
COROLLES environment manages different categories of knowledge not o,ly documents, but also technical andscientific data, as well as software. |
Users collect and provide their materilas and participate in the distribution and validation pocess of the knowledge. On this basis, a wide range of complemantaries facilities may be implemented, contituing successive autonomous layers. These layers will provide some new levels of abstraction and understanding of the content so as to ultimately attain an autonomous system of assitance in decision making and training. |
The development strategy is based on simple and natural methods of collaborative work which anable the knowledge to be formalized, validated and braodcast. |
COROLLE-DOC knowledge management and elaboration environment is not just a panel of software tools. It is a complete systems involving as much the users and thei abilityto elaborate abd to "surf" the knowledge (the "praxis" as opposed to the "theory") as the material or corpus (text-based elements) itself. |
